LGBT Young Adult Science Fiction & Fantasy in 2013
It's often been hard to find YA science fiction and fantasy with LGBT characters, but this year there’s been something of an explosion of SF/F with LGBT characters. By “explosion” I mean I’ve found 10 novels of SF/F with LGBT main characters published by mainstream publishers. I haven’t been keeping track of SF/F LGBT YA over the years, but it seems to me that this is definitely an increase.
So here’s 2013’s class of queer young adult SF/F:
- The Bane Chronicles by Cassandra Clare, Maureen Johnson, and Sarah Rees Brennan (Margaret K. McElderry Books) — A series of connected ebook short stories; pictured below is the fifth installment of ten
- The Culling by Steven dos Santos (Flux)
- Pantomime by Laura Lam (Strange Chemistry)
- Inheritance by Malinda Lo (Little, Brown)
- Proxy by Alex London (Philomel)
- The Elementals by Saundra Mitchell (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt)
- Teeth by Hannah Moskowitz (Simon Pulse)
- More Than This by Patrick Ness ((This book isn’t your typical spaceship sci-fi, but it does seem to be speculative fiction, so I’m including it.)) (Candlewick)
- Phantom Eyes by Scott Tracey (Flux)
- Coda by Emma Trevayne (Running Press Kids)
